Massada
college is a Jewish community school representing the
best of general and Jewish studies curricula. At Massada
College, we aim to provide the children with as comprehensive
an education as possible. This is done in a stimulating and happy
environment in which every individual is able to develop his/her
full potential according to his/her age, ability and aptitude. Our
smaller classes allow the teachers to ensure that individual progression
is maintained at all times. In order to cater for individual differences,
teachers assess the ability, rate of learning, learning style and
interests of each pupil. According to this assessment, each pupil
is catered for, at his or her own level.
Because
a child's cognitive development cannot be separated from his/her
intellectual, social, emotional and physical development, our approach
to education is holistic and child centred. When planning and executing
their curricula, teachers are constantly aware that they are dealing
with the whole child. Thus, every aspect of a child's development
is considered and nurtured.
For
the Jewish child, Massada college
caters for the broad spectrum of Jewish life represented in the
Jewish community exposing the children to the full range of Jewish
experience. Children who have exposure to such a rich traditional
Jewish education will be well equipped to make informed decisions
about the sort of Jewish involvement they may choose in later life.
The
College encourages our graduates to live a full Jewish life while
living within and contributing to the wider Adelaide
community - the philosophy of "Torah Im Derech Eretz".
The College also caters for non Jewish children who are encouraged
to take an active role in all educational activities and benefit
from the sound values that the College imbues in the children.
We
encourage our students to take pride in their College and this is
expressed most in three ways : through maintaining their school's
cleanliness, through compliance with the school expectations and
through being in their full school uniform at all times while at
school or on a school event.
School
Expectations
The
school encourages children to explore and to develop appropriate
social skills. We firmly believe that every child is entitled to
an education in a safe and unthreatening environment and therefore
no child has the right to deprive any other child or adult of the
ability to learn or the right to feel safe.
Therefore
the school has determined clear guidelines that encourage :
- inclusive
play, rather than exclusive play.
-
safe and creative play rather than destructive play.
- play
in a safe and supervised area rather than 'out of bounds'
- taking
care of school and other people's property
- a
cooperative atmosphere rather than a one built on power or might
- an
atmosphere of trust rather than one built on lying
- an
atmosphere of tolerance rather than one of harassment name calling
or insensitivity
- respect
due to parents as well as to staff
- sense
of manners with the use of words such as please, thank-you and
I'm sorry.
School
Uniform
All
students from R-7 are expected to wear their full school uniform
proudly at all times except on declared casual days. Where parents
are experiencing financial difficulties, the College attempts to
arrange for second hand clothes or less expensive alternatives.
Uniforms
are available for purchase through the school uniform shop with
the preferred method of purchase being through a school order form
available at the school office. Because of the different shades
of blues and greys, parents must buy through the uniform shop to
ensure uniformity although prices through the uniform shops are
generally considerably lower, in any event, than through retail
stores.

In
general, all children are expected to be well groomed, have hair
trimmed for boys and tied back for girls, have shoes polished and
clothes clean.
Children
are encouraged not to bring anything of value to school. Such items
can get lost and the school cannot accept responsibility for those
items.
A
transition period of summer to winter uniform and of winter to summer
uniform exists for the two weeks of term 2 and term 4 respectively,
depending on the weather.
