Adelaide
is home to three excellent and prestigious Universities - the
University of Adelaide,
Flinders University
and the University
of South Australia. It has
two Medical Schools, a School of Dentistry and a full spectrum of
faculties throughout the three institutions. There is an excellent
Technical College with the opportunity to study many trades, an
Agricultural College and a Catering School. Adult education is well
catered for.
University
education is heavily subsidised by the government which contributes
about two thirds of tuition fees. The average course costs a student
about $3,500 a year. The method of payment has been structured
in such a way as not disadvantage those who cannot afford to pay
while they are studying. The student can accumulate the debt and
pay it back on a percentage basis once he or she starts earning
more than $25,000 per annum.
Competition
for University places is high. At undergraduate level, most students
with a good academic record are offered their first choice. Postgraduate
courses are more difficult to get into.
It
is pleasing that Students of Massada
College have done particularly well at University level
and have excelled at Medicine, Law and the Arts.
