Charles
Fortune, the well-known South African cricket commentator, once
remarked that in his book, the three most beautiful cricket grounds
in the world were Newlands, Lords and the Adelaide
Oval. There is no doubt that Adelaide
Oval is indeed one of the most picturesque and beautiful cricket
grounds in the world.
The South Australian Cricket
Team is a member of the national competition and currently has three
members in the Australian Cricket Team.
Australians
take their sport extremely seriously, and Adelaide
is without doubt an important member of the Australian sporting
scene. This applies to spectator and participatory sports which
are well represented in South Australia.
Australian
Rules Football, a game which has its roots in Gaelic Football and
Rugby, is probably the most significant spectator sport in Adelaide.
At the beginning of 1997, Adelaide
entered a second team into the national competition and is now considered
to be a formidable opponent in the national football league. The
Adelaide Crows won the 1997
AFL Premiership, and this was a great success for sport in South
Australia. If you want further information see http://www.afc.com.au
Rugby
Union is less popular in South Australia
than it is in Sydney and Brisbane, but there is a small following
of the sport in Adelaide. Currently,
Rugby Union is played at a club level and South
Australia has one representative team. The Adelaide
RAMS are experiencing some success in the competition.
Residents
of Adelaide can participate
in or watch a number of sports including swimming, tennis, netball,
soccer, hockey, cycling, rugby (league and union), horse racing
and a variety of water sports.
South
Australians pride themselves on their level of involvement
in sport and have a proud tradition of participation and winning
in a wide variety of sports.
